What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

By Enliven Aesthetics, RN. Posted March 9, 2021

If you’ve ever browsed through our website before, you’ve probably noticed that a few of our services offer PRP Therapy treatments. These injections, which use your own blood, are a great alternative for medical or cosmetic procedures. But, what is PRP?

Let’s break it down for you…

What is PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP for short, is made up of a high quantity of your own body’s growth factors, which help stimulate a “growth” process that is needed for most outcomes of healing.

Composed of water and proteins, plasma is the liquid part of your blood that lets red and white blood cells and platelets move throughout your bloodstream. Platelets, on the other hand, are another type of blood cells that make blood clots primarily to stop bleeding and aid in healing.

How do you collect plasma?

In order to collect plasma, a blood draw is needed. One of our medical professionals will draw your blood and then use a machine to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of your blood. Once the area that is being treated is numbed, we will inject your freshly-collected PRP directly into the part of your body that is being treated. The PRP releases growth factors that basically tell the injected area to grow new, fresh tissue again (whether it be your thinning hair, torn muscle, or old, sagging skin).

Are there any side effects?

The majority of our clients do not report any major side effects; however, please be prepared to have your blood drawn. Make sure to eat healthy meals, drink plenty of water – not alcohol – and rest properly the day before any PRP procedure.

Who is eligible for PRP Therapy?

Everyone is eligible for PRP Therapy except for anyone who has the following:
– Abnormal platelet function or a low platelet count
– Anemia
– Cancer
– An infection
